The novel How to Survive Coventry is set in the city's beautiful Middleton Square. It's one of the best known pre-Renaissance shops in the world. I have always found that the more famous a place is, the more memorable it can be. A visit to Middleton Square was a trip back in time for me.

This is a story about two teenage girls who are thrown together in a strange new world and they barely know how to survive. The novel starts off in a small rural village called Middleton. The girls, Jasmine and Serena, have just moved in with their family in Coventry. The father, John is a well-meaning but absentee father. He works long hours and leaves his daughters alone at home, though they don't know what he does for a living.

The girls are soon attracted to the older brother, Stephen. He takes care of the home and provides a good role model for them, especially Jasmine. One day, when the family goes out for the evening, it is accidentally discovered that Stephen has a secret love of his own - Victoria. This upsets the girls who are suspicious that he might be married. Their father decides that he should get away from Middleton and visit the city to see his daughter.

How to Survive Coventry is set in the year 1560 during the reign of Queen Elizabeth. The book reads much like an Elizabethan drama, with alternating chapters in which the sisters are given separate chapters. They learn about the city's background, including the king and queen. The playwrights have done an excellent job recreating the language and accents of the time. This is a vivid, enjoyable read that will stay with you.

If you enjoy historical fiction but want something that is fresh and exciting, then this is a great choice. It is set in a city that is still very much in the modern age. This is perfect if you have an idea for a historical novel. In the novel, Jasmine and Victoria have been kidnapped by the English. They are taken to the city of Coventry where their father tries to rescue them and they are reunited with their father. This is the start of a terrible situation for both of them.

Throughout the novel, we learn about how the English treat their minorities, especially those of Irish and Native American descent. The novel makes us think about prejudice in a modern society and how to deal with it when encountering it. It is easy to connect to the characters because all of them have very different perspectives on things.

The main character, Jasmine, struggles with feelings of love and lust for her stepmother and her lover. However, she still loves her family. Her father wants her to marry someone of French or Spanish descent so she does not fall in love with anyone here. Her family wants her to return to them but Jasmine wants to experience new experiences. When her grandmother dies and is buried in the backyard, Jasmine's world comes crashing down around her. She goes to visit her Aunt Charlotte who tells her about the mistreatment of Native Americans and how her grandmother was treated.

The Hard Way author, Laura Hillenbrand, does an excellent job of writing dialogues between the main characters. She has created a vivid picture of life in the 1800's in the old west. Her descriptions of the old style China ware and tableware will draw you into reading this wonderful novel. The story starts off with a bang and does not let you stop until the end.
